A Billet Son Before The Game
The day has finally arrived, it is home opener day. I can’t explain how I am feeling on this day. As a Billet Mom I have seen the excitement build up throughout the week with our Billet Son.
We watched as he went through training camp and than the exhibition games. This is the moment he has been waiting for, putting on the team uniform with his number and name on his back and starting his season.
The conversation is all about home opener. Is it sold out? We have to win, its our home opener. We have been anticipating this day and now it is here.
Billet Parents Experience The Excitement
I am so excited I can hardly contain myself so I can’t imagine how my billet son feels. This is it, the big night the hours of practice, the making the team, this is what it’s all about, finally getting to play in the big leagues and getting to the next level.
We haven’t billeted anyone yet that wasn’t excited about home opener. Their pre-game nap was almost non existent as they were just too excited to sleep.
Even their pre-game meal was eaten in haste and some Billet Sons barely touched their food.
The butterflies set in and the nerves took over. Their feet hardly touched the ground as they ran out the door to head to the arena.
For me as a Billet Mom I to get very excited. I can feel it in the pit of my stomach and can hardly wait to get to the arena. As a matter of fact, opening night I would be at the arena an hour and a half before game time.
The Home Opener Warm-Ups
I had to be there in time for warm ups. I got quite bent out of shape if I wasn’t sitting in the stands for warm-ups. One of the players always acknowledged us when the players were coming on the ice. He would comment if he didn’t see us sitting there.
I liked to have a look at the team and see how their mood was, how good their shots on net were, did they seem tense or loose, did they look ready? Yes, all these things I looked for. I would also check out the goalies and make sure their head seemed to be in it. Especially the starting goalie of course. I know you think I am crazy but this is something I have done for years and love. My time, my turn to check out the team and access what kind of a game I thought they were going to have. My special time, alone with my thoughts, my team, the coach in the stands at that moment. Yes, JP (my husband) was beside me but few words were spoken because I was focused. No one could take that special time away from me and I looked forward to it every week. As a matter of fact I got right down snarly if I didn’t get there on time for warm-ups.
The Home Opener Begins
Waiting for the actual game to start seemed like an eternity. Finally the lights where dimmed and the music got louder and louder. Then it began, an amazing laser light show to music. The show was breathtaking and everyone was clapping and cheering. The announcer’s voice then rang out loud and clear over the PA as it was time to start introducing the players. Fans cheered loudly as each players name was called and he stepped onto the ice. I had goose bumps and butterflies in the pit of my stomach when our Billet Son’s name was called. I was so proud. Then the anthem was played and the home opener game began.
